Horses are powerful partners in therapy because they are capable of engaging in genuine connection and relationships. This relationship can be profoundly deeper than words. Horses communicate with their entire body not with words. Equine assisted therapy is about the relationship being created with the horse and how they respond to us. Horses are beautifully sensitive to our internal states and our energy and creating a relationship with them requires us to move deeper into our bodies and emotions where true communication and connection comes from.
Most equine therapy activities take place on the ground because the focus is on self-exploration and growth versus on horsemanship. We also incorporate rhythmic riding as part of our therapeutic work when appropriate. The movement of the horse during mounted work provides regulation of the nervous system and facilitates connection between our mind and body. It requires you to engage your senses and be present mentally. When movement and connection are intentional, they have the power to heal us from the inside out.
We create a path that meets you where you are and takes you where you want to go. Working within our supportive environment, your fear may prove especially effective in breaking through old patterns and revealing important insights. No prior knowledge of horses and/or horsemanship is necessary, by the way.
We have all experienced trauma as humans. Trauma informed means body based, being aware of how trauma effects our brains and nervous systems and providing reparative experiences that will heal the areas of ourselves that didn't get what they needed when we were hurt. We do not need to have experienced exactly the same types of trauma our clients did in order to have a baseline of understanding for how you have been impacted, because we generally share similar neurobiological wiring and responses to fear and pain.
One cannot understand the unique experience of being a client unless one has actually been a client. Barb and Marry have both participated in their own therapy and continue to do their own work. They continue to train and learn new modalities in order to grow personally and as professionals. Between them they have over 40 years of combined experience as therapists. They work well together as a team and offer clients the benefit of two mental health professionals with the added bonus of working with horses.
Finding Your Way accepts cash, check, PayPal, Venmo and credit cards. Equine therapy clients may use insurance. We can provide you with the necessary paperwork for your insurance company to reimburse you directly if we do not accept your insurance.
